Holton Sleaford Independent School

Outdoor Education 22-23

    Enrichment

      Rutland Water

        Ashbourne, Peak District

          Residentials

The students are taken out on various residentials across the academic year in a variety of locations, differing from one-night stays to five-night residentials. From Wales to Cornwall, there are many places the children get an opportunity to visit that they may not have had the privilege to go to before. On residentials we have days out taking part in loads of activities like walks in the peak district, swimming, and surfing in Polzeath. In the evenings we either cook as a group, which helps the students build their teamwork skills, or we will go out for a meal, helping enhance the social skills in a public environment. The time away from family can help enhance the independence of the students, and the time with classmates and staff helps build relationships and friendships. The experience helps all students build fundamental skills needed for future life whilst having fun with classmates away from home.

          Mountain biking, Sherwood Pines

            Mountain Biking

Here at Holton Sleaford Independent School, as part of our Duke of Edinburgh bronze award we do mountain biking. Mountain biking covers the physical section of the award. Mountain biking can also build pupils self esteem and confidence as well as the physical part which also helps pupils with their fitness.

The mountain biking is currently done at Sherwood pines which has four grades of difficulty which can help the pupils build confidence as they progress through the different grades, starting at green which is easy then blue which is moderate and red that is difficult and if these are achieved finishing with black which is severe.

            Surfing

              Watersports

                AquaPark

The children are taken to the aqua park with the school staff as one of the outdoor education sessions. This allows the children to feel more confident in water when falling off a piece of equipment unexpectedly. The children and staff bond and have fun in a safe and fun environment out of school. There are monkey bars, trampolines, swings, slides, and a blast bag which the children love being blasted off the end of the blast bag by a member of staff. This session is with other members of the public, which allows the children to improve their social skills. This session improves the children’s self confidence when competing with staff on the equipment. It promotes teamwork by working as a team to get onto the blast bag, using the hamster wheel and getting off together. This also helps them improve their communication as they communicate with others on the park and those on the session.
